Johannes Kepler's Solar SystemJohannes Kepler publishes Mysterium cosmographicum (Mystery of the Cosmos) in which he describes an invisible underlying structure determining the six known planets’ orbits. His model is based on five convex regular solids. The path of each planet lays on a sphere separated from its neighbors by touching an inscribed polyhedron. An inscribed cube separates the spheres of the outermost planets, Saturn and Jupiter. Inside the path of Jupiter, an inscribed tetrahedron contains the sphere for Mars. Spheres for the Earth, Venus, and Mercury are respectively nested within a regular dodecahedron, icosohedron, and regular octahedron. Later, more scientifically complete orbital data will fit Kepler’s model surprisingly well.

Virtual Grocery Shopping in the Subway

In an attempt to expand its market share in South Korean, the European grocery chain Tesco has come up with a brilliant idea. Tesco has launched a virtual grocery store in the subway. While waiting to commute, customers can purchase food items by scanning QR codes with their smartphones at virtual shelves installed right in the subway station. A delivery service drops off the ordered items at the customer’s door by the time they get home.

A patron of Edward Berner’s drug store in Two Rivers, Wisconsin is unable to order flavored soda water for religious reasons, as it was the Sabbath. Berner compromises by offering the man ice cream in a dish with the chocolate syrup that was previously only served as flavoring in ice-cream sodas, making the first ice cream Sunday. The dish’s name will later be changed to “Sundae.”

Kinemacolor, the first successful color motion picture process, is demonstrated at a scientific meeting in Paris, France. The Lumière Brothers, who will go one to become two of the earliest film pioneers, are in the audience for the demonstration.

Britain launches its 999 emergency services system and receives its first call at 4:20am.
