New Releases

After the DownfallAfter the Downfall by Harry Turtledove
Night Shade Books. (ISBN: 978-1-59780-130-0) Hardcover. Price: $24.95 Length: 324pp
An alternate history fantasy novel in which the Russians invade Berlin in 1945, and a German officer finds himself transported to a magical world of wizards and unicorns. Publishers Weekly says the main character’s “slow enlightenment breaks no new ground, but his story will appeal to fans of Turtledove’s straightforward style and military know-how.”

The Company by K. J. Parker
Orbit. (ISBN: 978-0-316-03853-9) Hardcover. Length: 419pp Price: $24.99
A fantasy novel about five war veterans who colonize an abandoned island, whose friendship is strained by the discovery of gold. Publishers Weekly says “This exquisitely written novel by a pseudonymous popular author blends gritty military fantasy with the 18th-century ‘island story’ tradition.”

    Dark Rain by Tony Richards
Harper. (ISBN: 978-0-06-147466-8) Mass market paperback. Length: 388pp Price: $7.99
Horror novel about a small town in Massachusetts inhabited by descendants of the witches who escaped the Salem witch trials.

    Doomwyte by Brian Jacques
Philomel. (ISBN: 978-0-399-24544-2) Hardcover. Length: 373pp Price: $23.99
The latest young adult fantasy novel in the long-running Redwall animal fantasy series. This book tells the tale of the Doomwytes, sinister ravens in pursuit of a fabled treasure.

    Foundation by Mercedes Lackey
DAW. (ISBN: 978-0-7564-0524-3) Hardcover. Length: 340pp Price: $25.95
A science fiction novel set in the Valdemar of Lackey’s earlier works, this book follows an orphan slave who is discovered to have special talents. Locus Magazine rather sardonically says that Lackey “returns to her tried-and-true formula: an abused child is rescued when Chosen by a Companion to become a Herald, and turns out to have special talents that may turn out to save the kingdom…”

The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
Tor. (ISBN: 978-0-7653-1689-9) Hardcover. Length: 572pp Price: $27.95
The third book in the “The Final Empire” fantasy trilogy after Mistborn (2006) and The Well of Ascension (2007). In this book, Emperor Elend Venture, now a Mistborn himself, struggles to save the world. Publishers Weekly says that it brings the trilogy “to a dramatic and surprising climax”, and concludes that “Sanderson’s saga of consequences offers complex characters and a compelling plot, asking hard questions about loyalty, faith and responsibility.”

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Scholastic Press. (ISBN: 978-0-439-02348-1) Hardcover. Length: 374pp Price: $17.99
A young adult science fiction novel set in post-apocalyptic America where young people are forced to battle to the death on TV. Stephen King says “Collins is an efficient no-nonsense prose stylist with a pleasantly dry sense of humor. Reading The Hunger Games is as addictive (and as violently simple) as playing one of those shoot-it-if-it-moves videogames in the lobby of the local eightplex; you know it’s not real, but you keep plugging in quarters anyway.”

    January Dancer by Michael Flynn
Tor. (ISBN: 978-0-7653-1817-6) Hardcover. Length: 350pp Price: $24.95
A space opera novel centered on the discovery of a mysterious alien artifact.

Key to Redemption by Talia Gryphon
Ace. (ISBN: 978-0-441-01644-0) Mass market paperback. Length: 298pp Price: $7.99
The third novel in the fantasy series following “paramortal psychologist” Gillian Key, following Conflict (2007) and Key to Conspiracy (2008). This book centers on a vampire named Aleksei Rachlav and his paramortal headquarters in Romania.

The Quiet War by Paul McAuley
UK: Gollancz. (ISBN: 978-0-575-07932-8) Hardcover. Length: 439pp Price: £18.99
A science fiction novel set in a 23rd century in which political forces on Earth deal with colonists in the outer planets. Locus Magazine, says it “is likely to end up as one of the best SF novels in this year of very good SF novels”.

Witch High by Denise Little, ed.
DAW. (ISBN: 978-0-7564-0513-7) Mass market paperback. Length: 307pp Price: $7.99
