The Great Geek Manual

So, last Friday was Conan O’Brien’s last show. It was absolutely fantastic. I had thought it would be completely madcap, but it turned out to be rather subdued and a bit sentimental instead. Before the end of the show, he offered a few parting words about how lucky he’s been over the course of his career and urged his fans not to be cynical about the fate of the Tonight Show. Before that, though, he and Tom Hanks offered this chestnut.

If you didn’t catch the show, it’s still up on Hulu, and judging by the seeder count, it’ll be available through Pirate Bay for some time to come.

God, I hated this show. My little brother watched it every single day when he was little, and try as I might, I could never convert him to eighties cartoons. (Even though Voltron could clearly kick the Power Rangers’ collective asses.) Still, this may be the funniest video College Humor has ever released.

Better Off Ted may well be the best show on television right now. I’m sure that it’ll be canceled prematurely any day now, like every other show I’ve ever loved, so I’m treasuring every moment.

I’m back! I just got my new computer up and running. A few weeks back, my desktop’s RAM went on the blink, leaving me stranded on my Asus netbook. While I could still do some light updating of my blog, my netbook’s tiny keyboard and screen made even the most commonplace activity a chore. So, I withdrew from most of my regular online activities rather abruptly, and I’ve been gone about three week since. And, while, in all reality, wasting less time vegging out in front of a monitor should have been good for me, what with all the extra time for exercise, fresh air, and visiting my family (HA HA), the fact of the matter is that it really, really sucked. Here’s why:

12. The six hundred Viagra sales pitches waiting in my Inbox.

11. My right index finger has atrophied noticeably.

10. My neighbors are all pissed off now that they’ve realized that their download speeds triple when I’m not online.

This was actually a fairly good year, not just in terms of my own personal life, but also in terms of Geek culture. The year was jam-packed with great book, game, and movie releases, and technology seems to finally inching into line with all those science fiction-inspired dreams of the future we had when we were kids.

Still, I’m hoping next year will be even better. To that end, I’ve drawn up a list of New Year’s resolutions.

10. I’ll finally give up cable television in favor of streaming video once and for all.
It should be easy enough, after giving up rentals and theaters for bittorrent years ago.

9. I’ll break out of my rut and make new friends.
For starters, I’ll find a new torrent community to take the place of Mininova.

8. I’ll take up a hobby not related to computers, in order to better relate to others.
So, I’ll be leveling the hell out of my tabletop RPG characters this year.
