How to Shoot Yourself in the Foot in Any Programming Language

Oct 17 2007 No Comment  732 views

“The proliferation of modern programming languages (all of which seem to have stolen countless features from one another) sometimes makes it difficult to remember what language you’re currently using. This guide is offered as a public service to help programmers who find themselves in such dilemmas.”

C
You shoot yourself in the foot.

Assembly
You try to shoot yourself in the foot only to discover you must first reinvent the gun, the bullet, and your foot. After that’s done, you pull the trigger, the gun beeps several times, then crashes.

BASIC
Shoot yourself in the foot with a water pistol. On big systems, continue until entire lower body is waterlogged.

C++
You accidentally create a dozen clones of yourself and shoot them all in the foot. Providing emergency medical assistance is impossible since you can’t tell which are bitwise copies and which are just pointing at others and saying, “That’s me, over there.”

Picture of the Week: Harvard Halo Hack

John Harvard Halo Statue

The night before the release of Halo 3, MIT hackers transformed the statue of John Harvard in Harvard Yard into the Master Chief. John was wearing the signature helmet from the game and was holding one of the guns from the game until around 8am. In the game, the character’s “real” name is also John.

The Harvard statue that got hacked is known as the statue of three lies. The inscription reads, “John Harvard, Founder, 1638,” but it’s not a statue of John Harvard, John Harvard didn’t found Harvard University, and Harvard wasn’t founded in 1638.

10. You met him at a Con and were brought together by your love of CosPlay.

09. He proposes… through a Diggnation podcast, through a news forum, through a search engine, through a webcomic, through an XBox game, through the webcam in front of an Apple Store, or using an iPod.

08. He proposes with a ring… inscribed with amino acid chains, inscribed with binary, inscribed with the word soulbound, or made from serial connectors.

If, like me, you’ve spent the past seventeen years reading and re-reading the spectacular Wheel of Time series as it was published, I’m certain that you’ll agree that there’s little humor to be had today. It seems that one of the greatest epics in fantasy literature will remain unfinished, and the author who penned it, a man who was a pioneer in using the Internet to maintain strong links to his fans, is dead.

According to his own official blog, bestselling fantasy author James Oliver Rigney, Jr., who was best know by his pen name, Robert Jordan, died yesterday at his home in Charleston, South Carolina of cardiac amyloidosis after a prolonged battle with cancer. He will be remember for his contributions to the world of epic fantasy, including his (now unfinished) Wheel of Time series and Conan novels, as well as the historical novels he wrote under the pen name Reagan O’Neill.
