Who would have thought fifteen years ago that every person in the free world would develop the need-the-net itch that used to be the hallmark of the hardcore computer geek. When I was in high school, I used to race home to log on, and absolutely no one understood why. This Christmas, my mother was regaling us with stories about how all of her friends are on “The Facebook,” and it dawned on me just how ubiquitous Facebook has become.

National Geographic: “With the worldwide population expected to exceed seven billion in 2011, National Geographic magazine offers a 7-part series examining specific challenges and solutions to the issues we face. The magazine introduces the series with its January cover story “7 Billion,” offering a broad overview of demographic trends that got us to today and will impact us all tomorrow. The first in-depth story will appear in the March issue, focusing on humans’ impact on the planet’s geology. Other stories will follow throughout 2011.”

Wwwhatsnew.com offers this informative infographic of projections regarding the growth of the internet over the coming decade. There’s no telling how accurate it is, given the speed at which the growth rate of networks changes.

Among the graphic’s predictions are the projection that the internet will be more equitably distributed and that the internet will no longer be a collection of just information, but also of things – sensors and mobile devices – not just servers. The internet will be growing at a rate of over 44 exabytes per month.

This isn’t one of the best designed infographics I’ve ever seen, but it certainly contains some interesting factoids. For instance, did you know that seven billion tweets have been made to date? That’s the equivalent of 133,000 copies of The King James Bible or about 350 million sheets of paper.
