Virtual Grocery Shopping in the Subway

Jul 8 2011 1 Comment  20 views

In an attempt to expand its market share in South Korean, the European grocery chain Tesco has come up with a brilliant idea. Tesco has launched a virtual grocery store in the subway. While waiting to commute, customers can purchase food items by scanning QR codes with their smartphones at virtual shelves installed right in the subway station. A delivery service drops off the ordered items at the customer’s door by the time they get home.

Utilities and Resources

  • GeeMail – a desktop client for Google Mail based on Adobe AIR.
  • LiberKey – a system for installing and keeping updated over 300 free programs (both open and closed source) on a Windows machine. All of the programs are portable meaning that they can run directly off a USB key without installing anything additional on the computer (this is very useful if you’re working on a computer where you don’t have administrative rights).
  • PintPay – enables you to add recurring payments and subscriptions to your site in 5 minutes. Free to setup, and no merchant account or gateway necessary.
  • Rapportive – a plugin that enhances GMail, adding a Twitter interface and more.
  • Resophnotes – a free note taking software that syncs with the “SimpleNote” cloud-based note taking service. Very convenient for the student on the go.
  • Tag Galaxy – a time-killing web app that uses Papervision3D to explore Flickr photo tags as virtual solar systems. Enter a tag, and related tags appear as planets around the initial choice. Completely useless, but fun to play with.
  • Web2DB – send a file to your Dropbox from its URL.
