What happened? I’m glad you asked. No, scratch that. In all reality, I was utterly shocked when, Saturday night, Larry asked what had happened to my content. True, I somewhat suspect that “Larry” may actually be my mother attempting to make me feel good about my blogging or my younger brother attempting to reinforce the delusion that legions of imaginary fans hang on every word of my blog in order to prevent me from hanging with him in the virtual world. (It turns out that stories about his bobble-headed babyhood are just as embarrassing in the presence of his WoW guild members as when retold in a loud voice at the counter of the local comic book shop in a ploy to curtail his hours of perusing.) However, in this one case, I think that “Larry” may, in fact, be a real person, because:
1.) While my mother did receive a computer for Christmas, she still shakes it like an Etch-a-Sketch when she wants to start over and…
2.) My brother peppered out last conversation with broad praise for my recent posts, despite the fact I haven’t posted anything recently, in an attempt to hide the fact that he hasn’t visited my blog in several weeks. Violence ensued.
As such, I have concluded that Larry is a real person or a highly sophisticated bot with truly excellent taste, and, in either case, I will regale you with the explanation.
I like to add some new feature each month, even if its only a small thing like a superfluous bookmark button. I start tinkering about a week in advance, as I usually pick whatever code I decide to install to death several time before settling on something. Well, long story short, If you Give a Mouse a Cookie…
May’s tinkering resulted in a little separation in the sidebar, which I decided would be solved by re-formatting my text tools (email, pdf, print this article), which led me to realize that it was time to upgrade my ContuttoPDF plug-in which has never worked right. The upgrade required me to update my WordPress plug-in, which I did. So, I installed WordPress 2.2, and, as with any upgrade worth having, everything straight to hell. I had to update a dozen plug-in the upgrade wasn’t compatible with, which caused a brace of mysql errors. I corrected mysql errors, then began tweaking the page templates in order to compensate for subtle differences, etc., etc., etc. … And somewhere in there I developed a server-side error for all my trouble.
All of it would have been par for course, except that Comcast, my Internet provider once again screwed me over again. For some reason, my connection was on the blink the entire week. By which I mean that it would go out in the morning, come on for ten minutes at dinner, then go out for the night. Each time I called in, they would tell me they were performing maintenance in the area, until I called in this weekend and another person altogether told me that there had been no maintenance at all. Sigh. After that call, it seemed to run fine. Whether or not it will be up for the rest of the week is questionable, but here’s hoping.
Once I had my connection back, the first thing I did was check out my Google Analytics and Adsense reports. Then, I nearly called Comcast back to ask them to disconnect me again. In the past seven days I’ve been gone, my Analytics have been higher than any week since my traffic peak in February and my Adsense account fattened by over a dollar, which is more than I make in most months. It’s almost like you like my blog better when I’m not here. *Sniffle*
And yet, you are still not rid of me.
