Lonely Geek Links

1 Dec 2006  Links

Lonely geek? Looking for that tall, dork and handsome someone to go through Half-Life with? There was a time when hooking up over the net was exclusively the province of the Geek. Saddly, that’s no longer the case. According to Bill Tancer, general manager of global research for Hitwise, there are over 1,150 online dating sites operating out the United States alone. Of those sites, only a hand full cater to Geeks. Below, I’ve listed some of the best Geek dating sites and pron on the web.

Advice
Advice from a She-Geek on Dating is of course, one of the oldest and most ubiquitous advice articles on the Internet.

Geek Dating 101 discusses Dating, Relationships, Tips, & Advice for Techies. Advice in a convenient podcast format.

Eric S. Raymond’s Sex Tips For Geeks – Dating advice fromt he author of such Geek classics as “The Hacker’s Dictionary” and “The Cathedral and the Bazaar.” This page is a collection of articles inspired by the character A.J.’s troubles in the User Friendly comic strip. “Hackers don’t have to be helpless chum in the dating-game shark pool. We have some advantages; with a little understanding of human ethology we can learn how to use them effectively.”

There are many more, of course, but for some reason, when you combine the word “Geek” with the word “date,” people seems to think “idiot” rather than “Geek.” I dunno why.

Dating Sites
Consumating is a free site geared toward the geek hipster crowd. Originally, they marketed themselves to geeks, but they’ve drifted into the mainstream over time. The site has over 10,000 members, and about 40 percent of its users are female. The site offers a Flickr-esque setup where post profiles with photos and tag themselves with interests and thumbs up or down. The site claims that this tagging approach lets members describe themselves without conforming to rigid stereotypes.

Geek 2 Geek is a traditional dating site with a twist. Like Consumating, about 40 percent of its users are female. Unfortunately Geek 2 Geek’s profiles don’t include photos alongside member profiles or info about what users actually look like. The site claims that “true geeks just don’t care about looks.” Still, the site has 20,000 users, mostly in their mid-20s. Geek 2 Geek charges members a monthly fee, and features geek-themed top-10 lists and member blogs.

Geek Plue One is a boisterous dating community with an active following. The site features photos and all of those little fringe features that increase your odds of bumping into someone of interest.

The Massively Multiplayer Online Dating site is designed specifically to hook-up gamers. The site boasts over 2,000 users, most of them male. The site’s a little bare, but the service is free, allowing you to create a profile and IM other members. Finally, a place to find women who not only won’t harass you about your game playing.

Nerd Passions, Shy Passions, and Trek Passions are basically the same site. They offer blogs, chat rooms, and user profiles, along with streaming radio, advice columns, and links of interest. Accounts are completely free, and the sites do enjoy a good bit of popularity, as evidenced by the large selection of profiles available to browse.

Networking for Geeks probably offers the slimmest pickings of the bunch, but deserves a mention, none the less. This site allows you to create a minimal profile for free, then search other profiles. No browsing or inter-user communication is available; however, unlike other sites, there is an option to post events and search for pen pals.

Sweet on Geeks markets itself as “A Dating Space where Gray Matters.” Sweet on Geeks features highly customizable profile page, personal blogs, anonymous email and IM accounts all for free. At first blush, the site appear somewhat less polished than it’s competitors; however one of the best features of Sweet on Geeks is that it is run by two real Geek couples who make their personalities felt throughout the site. In September, the site hit the one thousand member mark, with over fifty countries represented.

Geek Pron
Of course, being a lonely Geek, you may not actually wish to socialize. For you there is Geek Pron.

Geek Pron Commentary
Here is the original Nerd Porn Auteur track, which was popularized when a transcript was linked from BoingBoing. In his rant, comedian Ernie Cline calls for porn that nerd can enjoy.

In my kind of porno movies the girls wouldn’t even have to get naked. They’d just take the guys down to the rec room and beat them repeatedly at chess and then talk to them for hours about Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle or the underlying social metaphors in the Aliens movies.
