2008 was a pretty good year but the Geek culture is on this rise, and 2009 can only be better. After a week of reflecting on the past year, I’ve finally drawn up my list of New Year’s resolutions, and here they are.
10. I really will read a book that isn’t fantasy, science fiction, or a technical manual.
It won’t be an Oprah selection, but I might pick up a book of comic book philosophy.
9. I will not rant about the new Trek film outside the Trek community.
It’s not cannon, so it doesn’t count anyway.
8. I will take up a hobby not related to computers, to better relate to others.
In a related resolution, I will level my tabletop RPG characters much further this year.
7. I will move out of my mother’s basement.
I’ll also invest some time in redecorating my father’s guest bedroom.
6. I will no longer engage in religious debates.
It doesn’t matter whether Mac or Windows is better. Linux is free.
5. I will not let network television lure me into a fandom that’s a dead end.
Also, I won’t cry when I forget my resolution and Fox cancels Dollhouse.
4. I will choose one electronic media with which to communicate with the world.
(I won’t Twitter every time I update my blog about my WoW Guild’s social network.)
3. I won’t draw glares down upon friends by protesting violations of cannon in theaters.
I will go to the theater with my family more often, though.
2. I will immerse myself even further in Geek culture than ever before.
By next year, I will be able to write my resolutions in Klingon, Elvish, or BrainFuck.
1. I will stop heckling Microsoft across forums and blogs.
Between Windows Vista and Windows 7, it’s just not sporting anymore.
