Alright, here’s how much of a Geek I am. Today, I was browsing through Mininova’s sci-fi movies section when I found a movie called “Suspiria”. The first thing I thought of when i saw the title was the episode of Voyager called “Cold Fire” (season 2, episode 10) where the second Caretaker attempts to destroy the ship in a misdirected attempt to avenger the first Caretaker’s death. How bizarre is that? I haven’t seen an episode of Voyage in years.
The film title did get me think, though. Naming the second Caretaker Suspiria may very well have been an homage to director Dario Argento. Argento, who directed Suspiria, was an Italian director best known for his unpopular horror films, many of which became cult classics. It could very well be that one of Voyager’s writers, or even the director of the episode, was a fan of Argento’s work. The name may also be an allusion to the parallels between the plots of “Cold Fire” and “Suspira.” In “Cold Fire,” Kes is reunited with a colony of her people, whom she hopes can teach her how to use her telepathic abilities. As it turns out, her people are zealots bent on the destruction of Voyager. The plot of Suspiria, according to IMDB, is: A newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.” I haven’t seen the movie yet, so I’m not sure exactly how similar the storylines are. But it’s an interesting, if random, theory.
