I’ve just stumbled upon one of the most refreshingly original t-shirt shops I’ve ever encountered in my many long hours of online t-shirt shopping, the Retropolis Transit Authority.
Unlike the dozens of college-chic sites that invariably float to the top of any Google search, with their rough graphics and obscure cultural references, the Transit Authority features richly illustrated, uber-geeky science fiction tees that you don’t have to be an MTV maven to appreciate. Each of the eye-catching designs features a riff on a Buck Rogers-esque theme coupled with a snappy slogan reminiscent of propaganda poster of the twenties. Some of the shirts are quite hilarious and, while any of them would be sufficiently Geek to be worn to your favorite convention or late night comic shop event, their tongue-in-cheek attitude would certainly allow you to blend seamlessly into the crowd of “straights” at school or work without embarrassment (unlike my Potter fanboy apparel).
If you’re a fan of Ray guns and robots or of good graphic design, you’ll want to stop in and check out the Trransit Authority’s selection of nearly thirty designs, each of which is available on a number of shirts for between US$22 and US$30.
