Today is the Birthday of Gary Larson, creator of that classic comic that is a favorite with Geeks of all ages the world over, The Far Side. Larson was born in 1950, debuted his comic on January 1, 1980, and retired on January 1, 1995.
As far as I’m concerned, the day should be a national holiday, at least among us Geeks, seeing as how the January 1st anniversary of the comic’s debut is already occupied by New Year’s Day celebrations. The real magic of The Far Side isn’t its hilarity but how amazingly durable the humor really is. I had the comic panel above printed on a t-shirt that I wore nearly every week in high school, but I still smile every time I see it. For me, the definition of irony will always be pushing on a door with a sign that clearly reads “PULL” while wearing a t-shirt depicting the same.
Below, I’ve rounded up a list of the best comics to be found on the web. Of course, there are hundreds of comics to choose from. Blogs, filesharing, and porn are the only things that pop up quicker than web comics these day. But this is a list of my personal favorites, and I hope that you too find them bookmark worthy. There are twenty in all. Enjoy.
