Christopher Columbus uses his foreknowledge of the lunar eclipse to convince Jamaican Native Americans to provide him with the supplies necessary for his continuing voyage.

The first Pulsar (CP 1919) is discovered by Jocelyn Burnell at Cambridge.

1996
Activision releases Bad Mojo for DOS in the US.

Activision releases Zork: Nemesis for personal computers in the US. The game is the eleventh in the Zork series, which was formerly published by Infocom.

Atari moves its offices from 1196 Borregas Avenue in Sunnyvale to 455 South Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale, about 2.5 miles away. The new location is about 7,208 square feet and was once a Bank of America building. The building’s ten offices are occupied by Jack Tramiel, Sam Tramiel, Leonard Tramiel, Garry Tramiel, Dave Schwartz, John Skruch, Donald A. Thomas, Jr., Scott Sanders, Max Fagan, and Gayle McKim. The remaining floor space is dedicated to nine cubicles for five people, two storage areas, a kitchen, a conference room, and a reception area. The building’s vault door is left intact.

MicroProse releases the turn-based strategy game Civilization II for personal computer and the PlayStation in the US. ESRB: E (Everyone)

Activision releases Alundra 2: A New Legend Begins for the PlayStation in North America. ESRB: T (Teen)

Electronic Arts (EA) releases the golf game CyberTiger for the Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation in the US. ESRB: E (Everyone)

Fox Interactive releases Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas for Windows and the PlayStation. ESRB: T (Teen) for the PlayStation or M (Mature) for Windows.

Japan’s Posts and Telecommunications Ministry reveals that about twelve hundred post office cash dispensers across the nation crashed due to a computer glitch triggered by the February 29 leap day.

Version 1.0.0 of the R programming language is released. It is the first version of the language considered stable enough to be used in production. Visit the official R project website.
