The Children of Hurin is a wonderful novel, compiled from JRR Tolkien's original writings. His tales of Turin Turambar were some of the most complete of his unfinished writings, and Christopher has done an excellent job of compiling and editing them.

This is a much darker and more lurid tale than LotR, and readers should not expect a happy, sunny tale. The hero is cursed by the Dark Lord himself, and a pall of doom hangs over his head. It has the "feel" of mythology, with no furry-toed hobbits to mediate between the heroic world and the modern one.
